There are tons of solar panels on the market, but main trends are three types:
  1. Monocrystalline solar panels
  2. Polycrystalline solar panels
  3. Amorphous silicon solar panels (most known as thin-film solar panel.)

 

  • What are Monocrystalline solar panels?

Material: Each solar cell contain a silicon wafer that is made of a single crystal of silicon.

Performance: It has the highest efficiency and power capacity among all types of solar panels due to it’s purity of silicon.

Monocrystalline panel efficiencies can range from 17% to 22%, it will have a higher power output rating than other solar panels.

 

 

 

  •  What are Polycrystalline solar panels?

Material: Each solar cell contains multiple silicon crystals.

Performance: Polycrystalline panel efficiency ratings will typically range from 15% to 17%, with the developing of new technology, its efficiency is closer to monocrystalline solar panel.

 

 

  • What is Amorphous silicon solar panels?

Shape: Amorphous silicon thin-film cells are the oldest and most mature type of thin-film.

Material: They are made of noncrystalline silicon, unlike typical solar-cell wafers.

Performance: It efficiencies can range from 6%-7%. But it has the highest sensitivity of light among all three types of solar panels. So it has used in many indoor designs.

Amorphous silicon has been used as a photovoltaic solar cell material for devices which require very little power, such as pocket calculators, because their lower performance compared to conventional crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells is more than offset by their simplified and lower cost of deposition onto a substrate.
